Scallion cream cheese is the ultimate savory spread made with cream cheese, garlic, and finely chopped scallions. Perfect for bagels, sandwiches, or even as a dip, this homemade scallion cream cheese adds a fresh, herby kick with hints of everything but the bagel seasoning.

I first had a scallion cream cheese bagel at a Tim Horton's in Canada and it was delish! Unfortunately, when I got back to Australia, I noticed we don't really sell scallion cream cheese, so I made my own. Now you can make your own, too!

Ingredients

Cream cheese. The creamy base provides richness and tang, perfect for mixing with bold flavours; dairy-free cream cheese is a great alternative. I have used both and both work really well.
Everything but the bagel seasoning. A blend of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and salt adds crunch and bold seasoning; you can also mix individual spices to create your own. Here's my recipe for Everything but the Bagel Seasoning for you to try.
Scallions. Fresh scallions, also known as green onions or spring onions, add a subtle oniony kick and vibrant colour to the spread.
Garlic. Adds a savory depth and a hint of sharpness. I use fresh garlic that I've diced/minced myself because it has the strongest flavour which I like. You could also use pre-minced or powder if you want a milder flavour.

Storing
Scallion cream cheese can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5–7 days. Ensure the container is well-sealed to keep it fresh and prevent it from absorbing other odors from the fridge. Stir it gently before use to maintain its creamy texture.
Freezing
Freezing scallion cream cheese is possible but not recommended, as the texture may become grainy once thawed due to the separation of the cheese and moisture. If you must freeze it, store it in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. To thaw, leave it in the fridge overnight, and stir well before using to restore some of the original creaminess.
For best results, make scallion cream cheese in small batches so it's always fresh and ready to use on bagels, focaccia, or even a zucchini bread or carrot banana muffin.

FAQs
If you're looking for a lighter option, low-fat cream cheese is a great choice that still delivers a creamy texture. For a dairy-free or vegan alternative, there are plant-based cream cheese options made from almond, cashew, or coconut that work perfectly in this recipe. You can also try Greek yogurt for a tangy twist or whipped ricotta for a lighter, fluffier spread. Each option pairs well with the scallions, garlic, and everything but the bagel seasoning to keep the flavour on point.
It pairs perfectly with bagels, crackers, focaccia, sandwiches, or as a dip for fresh vegetables.
Increase the amount of scallions or add a pinch of onion powder for a bolder flavour.
