Honey mustard sauce is one of my partner's most requested recipes. And rightly so, it is bloody delicious! I make mine a little bit different because I love the underlying flavours of the honey and mustard and want to make sure they can come out to shine!
The first time I made a honey mustard sauce no mayo was for a tempeh recipe that I did for mine and my partner's meal prep. He's pretty against the "vegan" protein options, but didn't even complain because he LOOOOOVED the sauce.
You can put it on meats, vegetables, salads - literally anything and everything. Honey mustard is a flavour that will WOW any food you prepare it with.

Honey mustard sauce no mayo ingredients
My honey mustard marinade comes together with just a few ingredients that you likely have lying around your house already. Yes - it is THAT SIMPLE!
Dijon mustard. You could use yellow mustard, but I find dijon mustard gives a much greater depth in flavour.
Wholegrain mustard. Now this is my secret ingredient. I love the texture that comes from the mustard seeds and when you cook a honey mustard chicken or a honey mustard ham, you can see the seeds roasting up as well. Talk about delish!
Honey. And good quality honey at that. You want the sweetness to be able to cut through the tang from the mustard so don't get the stuff filled with extra sugars and preservatives.
Lemon. A lot of recipes use vinegar as the balancing ingredient, I like to use lemon as it gives my recipe more of a blend with a lemon mustard sauce (which I love!)
Olive oil. Again, good quality is key here. I will only ever use good quality extra virgin olive oil for my sauce recipes because it is definitely worth it when you taste it in comparison to lower quality.
Herbs. I use oregano, and of course, salt and pepper. Now, they're not necessary, but I think herbs always make things better and these are my recommendations for the honey mustard dressing.
Water. As I regularly use this as a marinade or as a honey mustard dressing, I will add a little bit of water to adjust the consistency.
What to serve with honey mustard sauce
Now this is the best part.
My most recent Butterflied Chicken was in a honey mustard marinade and absolutely delicious! You could also drizzle this sauce on roast vegetables, salads, sandwiches or other meats like a Baked Ham or Roast Pork.
This recipe isn't the best for dipping (it is more a honey mustard marinade) as you want something a little thicker. If you're after a dipping sauce, try adding some mayonnaise to thicken.
Storing honey mustard marinade
If you're wanting to make this ahead of time and store it, you definitely can! Honey mustard sauce will keep in the fridge for about 1 week if in a sealed container. I really love using mason jars to store my dressings in as you can give them a good shake when you want to use it again (especially because the honey might settle and crystallize a bit in the fridge).
You can use honey mustard sauce in a meal prep recipe as well. Combine with your protein, vegetables or even carbohydrates and store for up to 5 days in the fridge (depending on what you make) in an airtight container.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some do, but mine doesn't! This honey mustard recipe has no dairy or mayo so it's perfect for those who have allergens or food preferences.
No. Honey is considered by Vegans to be exploiting the labour of bees and can sometimes harm the animal. You could adapt it by replacing the honey with vegan honey, or omitting the honey all-together and adding in some more lemon to make a lemon and mustard marinade.
Honey mustard flavours can work as a sauce or as a dressing. It really depends on the thickness and what you want to use it for. I would classify my honey mustard recipe as fitting more into the dressing category, but with a few simple adaptations, you could make it thicker to serve as a sauce as well.
