How to make orange oats
- Prepare baking dish
Coat the bottom of an oven-safe pan with a small amount of oil or butter. I use an almost square pan for mine (link below), but you can use an oval or rectangular, you might just have to adjust the cooking time (tips in main recipe below).
- Mix ingredients
Extract the juice from the orange and add all ingredients to the pan and mix well. No need to worry about the mixture if it's slightly soggy from the oranges as this will help with the texture when baked. Flatten the top to ensure it cooks evenly.
- Bake oats
Bake for approx. 40 minutes @160C or until the top is golden brown. You can bake for less time (approx. 30 minutes) if you like a more gooey texture, or longer (approx. 40 minutes) if you like it really cakey.
- Serve
Cut into serving sizes and top with vanilla Greek yoghurt for an orange creamsicle oats.
Top Tip
Use fresh oranges for best flavour. This will enhance the citrusy taste and make the orange oats more vibrant.
Meal prep and leftovers
Meal prepping Orange Poppyseed Oats is a great way to ensure you have a nutritious and delicious breakfast ready for busy mornings. These orange baked oats can be made in advance and enjoyed throughout the week as either a breakfast meal prep or a filling snack.
Storing
Allow the baked oats to cool on the kitchen counter (no more than 2 hours), then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Reheating
Reheat baked oats individual portions in the microwave for about 30-60 seconds or until warmed through. You could also eat them cold for a quick breakfast on the go!
Freezing
Freeze the baked oats in individual portions for up to 6 months. For added convenience, cut the baked oats into squares or portions before storing so they thaw easier and are a quick grab and go breakfast. Thaw in the refrigerator for a couple of hours or overnight.

FAQs
Your baked oats might be gooey if they haven’t cooked long enough, the ratio of liquid to oats is too high, or if the oven temperature is too low. Ensure you bake the orange poppyseed oats until they are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean (some moisture is fine, it's mainly personal preference).
You can, but you don't have to. Soaking poppy seeds before baking helps to soften them and release more of their nutty flavor, enhancing the taste and texture of the orange poppyseed oats.
Oats generally refer to the whole grain or groats, while rolled oats are steamed and flattened whole oats, which makes them quicker to cook and ideal for recipes like orange poppyseed oats.
